Overview

Custom hobby shops and workshop buildings designed around how you actually plan to use the space — woodworking, mechanics, fitness, classic cars, or just a great place to spend time.

A hobby shop is personal. It's the space where you actually get to do the things you care about — restore a classic, build furniture, work on the bike, lift weights, or just hang out with friends. The layout, height, lighting, doors, and finish all need to match how you really plan to use it.

We build hobby shops with mezzanine lofts for storage or living space, oversized overhead doors for vehicles and equipment, insulated walls and ceilings for year-round comfort, and electrical and plumbing rough-in to support whatever specialty equipment you're running. Every detail is laid out with you, not pulled from a catalog.

Post-frame construction gives us the flexibility to build wide-open interiors without interior columns, add lofts and mezzanines, and finish out the inside to whatever level you want — from raw shop space to fully finished, climate-controlled workshop.

Things to Consider

Plan ahead, build once

A few details to think through before you start. We'll walk through all of these on your consultation.

  • 01

Ceiling height matters — 12' minimum if you'll use a vehicle lift, 10' for general workshop comfort.

  • 02

Plan electrical loads up front: welders, compressors, and dust collectors need dedicated circuits.

  • 03

Insulation pays for itself fast in Colorado — even uninsulated 'workshop' use benefits from at least R-19 walls.

  • 04

Add a half-bath rough-in if you're spending real time in the shop. You'll thank yourself later.

Frequently Asked

Common questions about hobby shops

How much does a hobby shop cost?

+

A bare-shell post-frame hobby shop runs $30–$50/sq ft. Adding insulation, electrical rough-in, finished interior, mezzanine, and concrete pushes that to $60–$90/sq ft. A 30x40 finished shop typically runs $60,000–$110,000 in Northern Colorado.

Can I build a hobby shop with living quarters?

+

Yes — that's a barndominium build, which we specialize in. The shop and living space share the same post-frame structure but have separate finished areas. See our barndominium page for details.

Do I need to pour the concrete floor?

+

Concrete is typically a separate trade — we coordinate timing and specs but the slab itself is poured by a concrete contractor. We can recommend partners we've worked with, or work alongside one you've already chosen.

How tall should my hobby shop ceiling be?

+

10' is the minimum we recommend for general use. 12' is much better if you're working on vehicles or want room for a lift. 14'+ if you'll have an RV or large equipment. Going taller is much cheaper at the build stage than retrofitting later.
